How EuroDev's GDPR solutions can help you do safe business in Europe

In today's blog, I will walk you through some questions you may have regarding GDPR and how we can help you navigate complying with European data protection law. In 2016 the new regulation was introduced by the EU parliament, to protect its citizens' privacy. This new law was named GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation). Before its introduction, each of the 27 EU member states had its laws and regulations concerning data protection and online privacy. While this new data protection law streamlines doing business in the EU for foreign corporations, it is also the strictest privacy and security law in the world.

Data protection and storage

Regarding data protection and data retention, it is mandatory to store all data collected from customers within the European Union's borders. This is also applicable to stored website data such as customer data, after an order or quotation request has been placed. In the past, I have noticed that this is one of the GDPR elements that Americans struggle the most with. One of the main effects of GDPR you might be aware of is the discontinuation of Universal Google Analytics in favour of the new GA4 service, which will store all collected data within the European Union instead. For other website data storage outside of GA4 data, you will need a European database provider or GDPR solutions partner like EuroDev to comply.

Privacy Policy

To be allowed to store and process online data in the EU a company is required to actively inform the visitor of what data is being collected and allow the individual to opt out or in, rather than it being opted in by default. A GDPR-compliant privacy policy needs to be detailed and comprehensive, while being easy to understand and to the point for all demographics. It must also include GDPR-specific clauses and acts regarding data rights in addition to contact information for EU or UK regulatory bodies.

Conclusion

In order to comply as a North American company, you have to actively inform your visitors about the data you are storing, so they can opt out or opt in. You need to find a solution to store the data of your European customers & partners in the European Union. Working with a European database provider or GDPR solutions providers like EuroDev can make this easy for you.
